Case 2
The dialysis machine alarms!

Who is your patient?

60 year male with CKD stage 4-5, underwent the creation of a right brachio-basilic AVF with transposition in December 2016. An ultrasound done a month later showed good flows. He was initiated on hemodialysis in January 2017 using his newly placed, well matured right brachio-basilic AVF with success. He was maintained on a stable dialysis prescription using a high flux, high efficiency dialyzer with a dialyzer blood flow rate (Qb) of 400ml/min, dialysis flow rate (Qd) of 600ml/min for a duration of 4 hours.

About 6 months later, the nurses started to note that during his dialysis treatments, the pressure alarms on the dialysis machine often go off.
